Despite blustery conditions, 36 pairs battled it out on Saturday 29 October in the club's annual doubles tournament. 58 games were played between 9.00am and 4.30pm, the end time predicted by Club Captain Tony Denton in his opening speech! The credit for that, and our thanks are due to event controllers Peter Sutherland and Paul McAuley. Elaine and Javaan deserve special mention for serving food all day as do Ron Rench and John Maxwell for their sausage sizzle.
Thanks to all the participants, to our sponsor Langley Twigg Law, without whom we would not be able to give such generous prizes, and congratulations to the winners, namely: Men's A Winners: Russell Broughton & Luke Donovan Runners up: Zac Atkins & Andrew Shand Plate: Allen Hokai & Shane Aitchison Ladies' A Winners: Carole Rowsell & Louise Reynolds Runners up: Victoria Kerrison & Stacey Skilton Special Plate: Cathy Clarkson & Linda Brown Plate: Helen Roper & Alison Timms Consolation: Sophia Nash & Rileigh Knapp Men's B Winners: Hamish Stewart & Mark Mahoney Runners up: Ross McDonald & Thomas McDonald Special Plate: Stephen Underhill & Mike Roberts Plate: Greg Margerison & Tony Verry Consolation: Tom Carey & Andrew Hooper Ladies' B Winners: Joan Matherson & Marcia Mabey Runners up: Mandy White & Annie Dennehy Plate : Jane Davison & Kristen Nash To Hawke's Bay Lawn Tennis Club
On behalf of the Rotorua Tennis club I would like to formally invite members of your club to travel through to Rotorua next year in order to try and w(rench) the Willy Stevens Challenge Trophy from our grasp. If that invitation is taken up then I will leave it up to Leona and Ron to work out the minor details as to when and how this challenge will take place. This year our group of players travelled down to your club with a lot of tennis being played and meeting some great people. We appreciated the range of skill levels that was catered for and I can say that all our people enjoyed the weekend. Seeing the players out there on the tennis courts at your club with a brisk breeze blowing through allowed me to reflect back on the good times I had with our mutual friend Willy. I reiterate what I said to everyone on the day, thank you and your club for the hospitality shown to us when we were there and it would be great to see you up our way next year. And a special thanks to Ron and Leona for arranging the weekend. Kind regards to you all. Geoff Kaye President – Rotorua Tennis Club If you are travelling the country or the world, take a snap of where you are and it will get published. Even better take it with a piece of Lawn Tennis apparel in the picture. Marie Karl and former Lawn Tennis member Fiona Moody with the Davis cup in Worthing, UK.
On 19 October, we hosted the HB Primary and Intermediate Schools finals; a great way to promote HBLTS and its facilities.
It was also a great coup for us, and in particular our coach Simon Winter that all four singles finalists came from HBLTS. The two finalists in the Primary School division were River Apatu and Charlie Nash The two finalists in the Intermediate School division were also from HB Lawn: Luke Winter and Ben Hansen. Congratulations to all juniors from HBLTS who took part, to their parents for their support, and a special word for River and Luke who took the prizes. This is the challenge we have with Hawkes Bay Squash Raquets club on an annual basis. This year they hosted Lawn Tennis to three different activities of their choice at their club. They were squash in all grades plus some games of doubles, pool and darts. They declined our idea of tennis and petanque. Unfortunately we lost the squash and pool and won the darts so the trophy ended up staying with them for the next 12 months. In a not so serious finale,The Lawn won a 8 player per team game of 10001 dart game with Tom “the Power” Carey nailing the final double 1 to claim the victory. Next year it is our time to host with our choice of sports. Mike and Robin handing Rick Nichol the trophy
